SEATTLE Whatever insider knowledge former Washington assistant Cameron Dollar, the first-year Seattle University coach, had on the Huskies, it was useless Tuesday night. Any extra motivation Redhawks star Charles Garcia, the one-time UW signee who was denied admission, might have had, it too was of no consequence. None of the subplots played a factor in the outcome in the battle for Seattle bragging rights. The Huskies removed all suspense and intrigue in the opening minutes and cruised to a 123-76 historic blowout over their old crosstown rival before a packed house at Edmundson Pavilion.
The 47-point win surpassed last years 87-60 Washington win over Seattle U. and was the largest margin of victory among the 25 games played in the series that began in 1953 between the Montlake and Capitol Hill schools. The feel-good win was also the perfect tonic for Washington, which limped home after consecutive defeats in Los Angeles last week at UCLA and USC. It was a game that will help us get the bitter taste out of our mouths, but until we get back into Pac-10 play and get back on our feet, it wont remove that totally, UW coach Lorenzo Romar said.
Inside Hec Ed, the Huskies are a different team. In front of 10,000, they pressed, harassed and tormented the Redhawks into submission. They raced out to an 18-0 lead and never looked back. The Redhawks scored their first points 5:12 after tipoff when Cervante Burrell sank a layup.
Seattle U. needed 15:02 to reach 10 points, but by then Washington had 40 and the rout was well on its way. The Huskies led 61-20 at half. They reached 100 points with 7:23 remaining and in the final 1:27, the Redhawks played with just four players after six were disqualified for fouls.
